How To Live Off The Grid
"Want
to take the first step and start living off the grid? Here's how
to start living off the grid in 3 easy steps... "
How To Live Off The Grid...
Most people don’t realize how easy it is to live off the
grid. All it takes is some education and proper planning.
This article will cover three key steps for living off the grid: A
minimalist or conservationist attitude, proper energy generation and
how to get clean water. By the end of this article, you’ll
have a very solid idea of how to live off the grid.
Off the grid
living Step One – Conservation
Until you’re more experienced at living off the grid, keep it
simple. Use just a few appliances, just what you need to get by.
I think that the TV set should probably be the first to go. Next are
the washer and
dryer, which both eat up huge amounts of electricity and water.
Use water-conserving shower heads. If possible, use water conserving
toilets too.
Off the grid
living Step Two – Electricity
Install solar panels or a wind generator.
Unless you’re in an area with no sun, solar panels will be
less costly and easier to install.
With getting electricity, there are two ways to go about it:
Purchasing
one and getting it done professionally, or building one yourself (diy
solar panels).
With a wind generator, getting one installed professionally will cost
you upwards of $15,000. With solar panels, you’re also
looking at between $5000 to $60,000 for your average home. (Note: Many
states offer rebates and tax cuts for building a solar home that can
cut your expenses by as much as half.)
If you choose to build it yourself, it’ll likely cost you
under $1000. There are many, many people who choose to take this route
nowadays. Just realize that it comes with its own costs in time and
headaches associated with building your own solar panel or wind
generator.
Tip:
With step by step instruction and the Earth4Energy manual, building
your solar panel or wind
generator will cost you less than $300.

Step Three – Water
There are several ways you can get water. One way is to gather it with
a water harvesting cistern. Place this outside and it’ll
gather water for you.
Another way is to get water from a stream, river, or well. Make sure
that you have proper water filtration if you take this route.
Ideally, you’ll want to be able to store 1,000 gallons of
water to ensure that you have water when you need it.
There you have it. Once you have your electrical and water systems set
up, you’re now living off the grid.
As you can tell, it takes
some initial work to set up, but once everything is up and running, the
annual cost to live off the grid will be pretty inexpensive when you
compare to your usual power bills.
